Kurzbeschreibung/Zielsetzung

During the recent years, cardiovascular and immunological research has provided profound experimental and clinical evidence supporting the notion that inflammation and immune responses are crucial components of vascular proliferative diseases. This chapter aims to provide a state of the art overview of this concept. In doing so, we discuss a number of novel developments in the highly dynamic field of immunology, with particular emphasis on their relevance for cardiovascular disease. These include functional subsets of macrophages and T lymphocytes, newly identified receptors for pathogens, the reciprocal regulation of lipid metabolism, inflammation and infection, and the hygiene hypothesis.
