Brief description/objective

Direct removal of disease-causing substances from human whole blood is arguably the most direct cure imaginable. In the recent years, the selective removal of a diversity of substances and constituents of human whole blood has been demonstrated. However, translation of the technology depends on the efficient and selective capturing of the target compounds on the one hand, and the effective, quantitative removal of the magnetic nanoparticles from flowing blood on the other hand.
In this presentation, we will first present most recent achievements demonstrating a highly selective, quantitative capturing of disease causing factors, ranging from proteins to single cells and benchmark the magnetic blood purification technology against existing blood cleansing approaches, including therapeutic plasma exchange and apheresis. We will present magnetic nanoparticle core material designs along with surface functionalization strategies for selective target capturing. In the second part of the presentation, we will discuss important parameters and material characteristics imperative for quantitative magnetic nanoparticle recovery from blood in extracorporeal circuits.

Only the combination of the aforementioned steps can render (extracorporeal) magnetic blood purification into a safe and competitive technology extending the applicability of blood cleansing to disorders beyond kidney failure.
