Brief description/objective
Metamizole is increasingly prescribed as a pain killer, even though the severe hematological side effects are well known. Fortunately, agranulocytosis often resolves after a few days, however, this case illustrates, that it can persist for many weeks, putting patients at risk for fatal outcome.
We strongly suggest that metamizole should not be used uncritically as analgesic of first choice. However, in selected clinical settings this drug still plays a useful role.
