Brief description/objective
Gait parameters like gait velocity, stride length, cadence or load symmetry contribute to a successful outcome after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and can be addressed through targeted physiotherapeutic training programs.
Instrumented gait analysis is a standard tool for assessing these parameters and many more, but it requires extensive technical equipment and is costly and time-consuming. Smart sensor insoles (SSI) present an innovative alternative to instrumented gait analysis, and allow for real-time measurements of various gait parameters. Hence, SSI are considered a cost- and time-effective alternative to traditional gait analysis labs. This is the first research project that aims 1) to measure specific gait parameters in patients undergoing unilateral THA using SSI, 2) to compare the findings to a matched healthy control group and 3) to assess correlations between specific gait parameters and patient reported outcomes in patients undergoing unilateral THA.
The project involves several patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and gait assessment in a healthy, age matched control group, while the same measurements will be performed preoperatively, 2 months and 12 months postoperatively in THA patients. Taking administrative matters into account, the estimated duration of the whole project is set to 4 years.
