Brief description/objective
Radiation Oncology today is more targeted, personalized, and deals with much smaller treatment regions. The small and highly sophisticated dose distributions pose great challenges for modern radiation dosimetry. High performance detectors are used to allow physicians prescribe ionizing radiation with the same precision and confidence like with any other medication. The indications and complexity in high-precision radiation oncology are still increasing due to better diagnostics and demographic changes in the patient population. In ScintiPOF, we are going to develop better, faster, and smaller detectors based on a novel class of scintillation materials: perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) and polymer optical fibers. PNCs could enable 10 times increased sensitivity and much higher detection speed. Until now their application as a radiation dosimeter in Radiation Oncology has not been reported. Our design will lead to detectors with high dose sensitivity and light output, high spatial resolution and straightforward production method. The successful completion of ScintiPOF will allow KSSG first-hand access to new developments in radiation dosimetry. It will also set the starting point for a larger research project to be submitted in 2023 and may lead to a new technologyintensive product for the Swiss medtech industry.
